| 授業の概要 |
In this class, we will take an innovative approach to developing listening and speaking skills by using an authentic textbook focused on personal development and well-being. Importantly, the text is read aloud by the author in the unabridged audiobook, which is also a required text. Students will develop academic English skills in a range of academic listening and speaking tasks. There will also be a massive amount of contextual and deliberate vocabulary learning required. |

This course aims to engage students in exercises to consider topics in leadership and self-development while they improve their English critical thinking and communication skills. Students will learn new concepts and encounter new perspectives regarding topics concerned with everyday life. As they do tasks focused on learning academic English, students will engage in logical thinking about principles of effective living while using English to do so. |

The course will proceed systematically through the topics in the main textbook. Every week, there will be reading homework, listening homework, and vocabulary to study. There will also be frequent quizzes in class.

Evaluation will be based on quizzes that cover vocabulary and main text comprehension (35%), speaking tasks (35%), and the final test (30%). Attendance will be closely monitored, and students absent from 4 classes or more will not earn credit.

The required texts for this class are quite expensive, but they are also the texts for Communicative English 2a. Students must purchase both the paperback version and the 15-hour unabridged audiobook for listening. The instructor hopes that students will return to this book many times to both enhance their English skills and also for guidance in their personal lives. |
